What are you giving up to edit your photos? [INFOGRAPHIC]

How do you feel about the new pricing trends?

How do you feel about Adobe changing how you use and purchase Lightroom and Photoshop? More specifically, do you like the change from the traditional one-time fee to purchase Lightroom or Photoshop or the monthly subscription via the creative cloud you now have to deal with?

The creative cloud is actually part of a business model called

Software as a Service, which I’ll get into more later on.

15 years ago when I first started taking photos I didn’t even know what Lightroom was because it didn’t even exist yet. Photoshop was the program of choice for editing your images and man was I clueless as to how it worked. One thing I did know was that if I wanted to use photoshop and eventually lightroom when it was released in 2006, I had to spend a lot because they cost a lot up front. Photoshop used to cost approximately $800.00 where compared to now you spend about $12.00 per month/$144 per year. That’s a difference of over 500%.

…you spend about $12.00 per month/$144 per year.

That’s a difference of over 500%.

Over the past decade companies like Adobe have transitioned to the creative could business model where you have to pay for a subscription to use programs like Lightroom and Photoshop. For the sake of this article we focused on 3 of the most popular types of business models that exist in the software world. Why are we doing this? Because there are pros and cons to each that we would like to highlight and inform you about.

Quick question, I know that I would prefer to pay my way, what way would you prefer to pay for your photo editing software?

For me, Initially I was not happy that I was forced into a payment process that I had no choice over but as I started to use the Creative Cloud I found that it was very affordable and I loved getting the most up to date version of Lightroom. As a professional I love the Creative Cloud model where I pay one monthly fee and use lightroom as much as I want. If I was an avid hobbyist and didn’t output thousands of photos per month, I would be very interested in the pay per use model because I would only pay for how much I used Lightroom. Interesting thoughts.
